My Review

“Blood Alley” is an adventure film starring John Wayne as a riverboat captain transporting dozens of Chinese people at a time from the Communist mainland to freedom in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. Director William Wellman (“A Star is Born” 1937) knew how to put together a watchable motion picture. This one is chock-full of action, adventure, and the heroic personality of the Duke, perfect in the role of real-life Captain Tom Wilder.

The supporting cast includes Lauren Bacall, Paul Fix, Joy Kim, Mike Mazurki, Anita Ekberg, Barry Kroeger, James Hong, Lowell Gilmore, and Henry Nakamura. This was Ekberg’s first speaking role, in a film career that lasted from 1953 to 1998. The exciting “Blood Alley” in CinemaScope was modestly successful in theatrical release for producer John Wayne, Batjac Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
