“Black Sea” is a maritime thriller movie about a retired British Naval officer who assembles a team of English and Russian men to search for a sunken World War II Nazi U-boat filled with gold. Director Kevin Macdonald (“Marley” 2012) skillfully molded the story into a suspense-filled thriller that lacks any dull moment, from an excellent screenplay by Dennis Kelly.
Jude Law probably gave one of his best performances ever in this lead role, a different one for him, with a supporting cast that includes Ben Mendelsohn, Scoot McNairy, Konstantin Khabensky, David Threlfall, Tobias Menzies, Daniel Ryan, Karl Davies, and Jodie Whittaker before she became the 13th Doctor in the “Doctor Who” series (2018-2022).
The watchable UK film “Black Sea” was not successful in general release for Film4 Productions, Cowboy Films, Etalon Films, Focus Features, and Universal Pictures.
