My Review

Great acting is evident in the Warner Bros. crime drama “Black Mass.” Johnny Depp’s performance as mobster James “Whitey” Bulger is absolutely brilliant and compelling. Depp is almost unrecognizable between the heavy make-up and the tour de force nature of this role.

Producer-director Scott Cooper (“Out of the Furnace”2013) seemed concentrated on the film’s performances, with a talented supporting cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Joel Edgerton, Corey Stall, Peter Sarsgaard, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Bill Camp, Juno Temple, and Adam Scott.

A fault of this movie is the overly ambitious screenplay by Jez Butterworth and Mark Mallouk. The story seemed to meander, losing focus at the film progressed. It may have been too long at 123 minutes. Director Cooper needed to take charge and organize the script a little better. “Black Mass” barely made a profit for Warner Bros. Pictures, with the burdensome pace of the film bogged down with numerous plots and subplots, as well as everyone cussing up a blue streak.
