My Review

“Big Daddy” is a comedy picture about a young man who gets dumped by his girlfriend for being irresponsible and immature, and he tries to impress her by adopting a five-year-old boy. The bumpy and predictable comedy proceeds from there, sloppily directed by Dennis Dugan (“Happy Gilmore” 1996). One big problem in this movie is the inconsistency in the script, as the language and themes continually shift back-and-forth between crude humor and family sentimentality. This is caused by less than stellar writing from screenwriters Steve Franks, Tim Herlihy, and Adam Sandler.

The cast includes Adam Sandler, Joey Lauren Adams, Jon Stewart, Rob Schneider, Leslie Mann, Joseph Bologna, Steve Buscemi, Allen Covert, Josh Mostel, Kristy Swanson, and Dylan Sprouse and Cole Sprouse as Sandler’s son. The marginally watchable “Big Daddy” was a hit at the box office for Columbia Pictures, Out of the Blue Entertainment, Jack Giarraputo Productions, and Sony Pictures Releasing. Adam Sandler won the Worst Actor Award from the Golden Raspberry “Razzie” Awards.
