“Bewitched” is a romantic comedy film which is a remake of the popular 1960’s television sitcom that ran on ABC from 1964 to 1972. It tells the story of a Hollywood actor who takes a role playing Darrin Stephens in a movie called “Bewitched” only to soon find out that his co-star portraying Samantha actually is a witch. This convoluted storyline suffers from poor direction by Nora Ephron (“Sleepless in Seattle” 1993), who co-wrote the awful script with Delia Ephron.
The film has no shortage of stars, including Nicole Kidman as Isabel Bigelow/Samantha Stephens, Will Ferrell as Jack Wyatt/Darrin Stephens, Shirley MacLaine as Iris/Endora, Michael Caine as Nigel Bigelow, Steve Carrell as Uncle Arthur, Carole Shelley as Aunt Clara, Amy Sedaris and Richard Kind as Gladys & Abner Kravitz, as well as Jason Schwartzman, Kristen Chenoweth (her motion picture debut), David Allen Grier, Nick Lashey, Heather Burns, Jim Turner, Stephen Colbert, and Michael Badalucco. Ed McMahon, Conan O’Brien, and James Lipton appeared as themselves in cameos.
Confusion reigns in the barely watchable film “Bewitched,” which flopped at the box office for producers Penny Marshall and Nora Ephron, Red Wagon Entertainment, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing. It was nominated for numerous Golden Raspberry (Razzie) Awards and Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, winning one Razzie for Worst Screen Couple (Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman).
