Master mockumentarian Christopher Guest (“Waiting for Guffman” 1997) is at the top of his game in “Best in Show.” This hilarious story follows five dog owners as they enter their pets in a prestigious dog show, not unlike the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, established in 1877, held annually at Madison Square Garden in New York City. (A mockumentary is a movie that takes the form of a serious documentary in order to satirize its subject.)
Much of the dialogue is adlibbed, under the guidance of director Guest, who also co-wrote the “screenplay” with Eugene Levy. The cast includes Christopher Guest (husband of Jamie Lee Curtis), Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Parker Posey, Jennifer Coolidge, Jane Lynch, Michael McKean, Fred Willard, John Michael Higgins, Michael Hitchcock, Larry Miller, Ed Begley Jr., Bob Balaban, Don S. Davis, Rachel Harris, Colin Cunningham, and Lewis Arquette in one of his last film appearances. He passed away in 2001, and was the son of Cliff “Charlie Weaver” Arquette and father of Rosanna Arquette and David Arquette.
“Best in Show” was a modest hit in theatrical release for Castle Rock Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures.
