My Review

“Beaches” is a story about the friendship of two women who meet as children and remain close buddies throughout the decades. Director Garry Marshall (“Young Doctors in Love” 1982) put together an engaging and engrossing musical comedy-drama that has a fast moving two hour running time. The script was written by Mary Agnes Donoghue, adapted from the 1985 novel of the same name by Iris Rainer Dart.

Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey are the two principal players, who no doubt have instilled much of their own personalities into their characters. Co-stars include John Heard, Spalding Gray, James Read, Linda Goodfriend, Lainie Kazan, and Mayim Bialik as a young Midler. There were cameos by Garry Marshall, Frank Campanella, Tracy Reiner (daughter of Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner), Scott Marshall (son of Garry Marshall), and Hector Elizondo as the judge.

The very watchable and entertaining “Beaches” was popular at the box office for producer Bette Midler, Touchstone Pictures, Silver Screen Partners IV, All Girls Productions, Buena Vista Pictures Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company. It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Art Direction. The song “Wind Beneath My Wings,” performed by Bette Midler in the film, won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
