My Review

Neil Simon keeps the mood light and breezy, per usual, in the romantic comedy “Barefoot in the Park.” This big screen version of his 1963 play tells the story of newlyweds Paul and Corie Bratler, opposite personalities trying to survive marriage in close quarters in a small walk-up apartment in New York City.

Robert Redford and Jane Fonda have good chemistry on film, this being the third of five films they made together: “Tall Story” (1960), “The Chase” (1966), “Electric Horseman” (1979), and “Our Souls at Night” (2017). The supporting cast added even more quality to this picture: Mildred Natwick, Charles Boyer, Herb Edelman, Mabel Albertson, Fitz Feld, Ted Hartley, and James F. Stone. Billie Bird and Doris Roberts appeared in uncredited cameos. Natwick was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

“Barefoot in the Park” was successful at the box office for producer Hal B. Wallis, Hal Wallis Productions, Nancy Enterprises Inc., and Paramount Pictures.
