My Review

An early Jane Fonda performance in the title role dominates the science fiction classic “Barbarella.” The director was Roger Vadim (“And God Created Woman” 1956), Fonda’s husband at the time, who, along with producer Dino De Laurentiis, imbued the film with outstanding production values, highly original costumes, lavish sets, and unique special effects that make for a visually satisfying motion picture.

“Barbarella” was based on the 1964 French comic book by Jean-Claude Forest. The crew of screenwriters includes Terry Southern, Claude Brule, Vittorio Bonicelli, Clement Biddle Wood, Brian Degas, Tudor Gates, Jean-Claude Forest, and Roger Vadim, who put together a fun story with maybe some unintentional humor. An example of the dialogue: Barbarella: “I hear screaming. A good many dramatic situations begin with screaming.”

Fonda’s international supporting cast members include John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O’Shea, David Hemmings, Ugo Tognazzi, Marcel Marceau in a speaking role, and Claude Dauphin as The President of Earth. The opening sequence with Fonda floating around the spacecraft really makes the picture! While not a success at the box office for Dino De Laurentiis Cinematographica and Paramount Pictures, the very watchable “Barbarella” is a fun and watchable movie to view well into this 21st century.
