“Bad Education” is a crime drama film about a successful Long Island school superintendent bringing his district attention and prestige with higher education results. That begins to change when a student reporter uncovers an embezzlement scheme, causing him to formulate a cover-up.
The fascinating drama proceeds from there, something of a cross between “All the President’s Men” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” with tight direction by Cory Finley (“Thoroughbreds” 2017). The well written screenplay by Mike Makowsky was adapted from a true story in 2004 “New York” magazine by Robert Kolker.
The cast is headed by Hugh Jackman as the bad superintendent, who delivers a fantastic performance, yet another one out of his wide acting range bag of tricks. Co-stars include Allison Janney as his assistant and partner-in-crime, Geraldine Viswanathan as Rachel the reporter, Ray Romano as the school board director, Pat Healy as the District Attorney, Larry Romano (no relation) as cousin Larry, Kathrine Narducci, Rafael Casa, Stephen Spinella, and Annaleigh Ashford.
The very watchable “Bad Education” premiered on HBO Films, through Warner Bros. Television Distribution, produced by Automatik Entertainment, Sight Unseen Pictures, and Slater Hall Productions. It won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie, and Jackman was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor.
