My Review

“Baby Driver” is an action movie about a getaway driver seeking freedom from his life of crime, which his boss is reluctant to allow to happen. This engrossing though formulaic thriller was capably written and directed by Edgar Wright (“The World’s End” 2013), with more than its share of shoot-outs and car-chase scenes. The film’s nearly two hours could have been trimmed by 15-20 minutes.

The cast includes Ansel Elgort as the baby driver. He delivers an even performance throughout the film’s 113 minute running time. He has good chemistry with Lily James, who plays his girl friend. Kevin Spacey also does his usual fine delivery as Doc, the kingpin of the Atlanta crime gang. Jon Hamm is in a different role, for him, as one of the heavies of the piece. Others include Jamie Foxx, Eiza Gonzalez, Jon Bernthal, C. J. Jones, Sky Ferreira, Jon Spence, and Paul Williams as The Butcher.

The watchable escapist entertainment movie “Baby Driver” was a big hit at the box office for TriStar Pictures, Working Title Films, MRC, Big Talk Productions, and Sony Pictures Releasing. Baby Driver could sympathize with Al Pacino in “Godfather III” (1990) when Pacino as Michael Corleone stated that “just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!”
