My Review

“Babies” follows the activities of four infants from their birth through their first birthday. French documentary director Thomas Balmes contrasts the children of four cultures without narration, leaving it to the viewer to interpret the film. The children are Hattie of the United States, Mari of Japan, Ponijoa of Namibia, and Bayar of Mongolia.

The entire seventy-nine minutes of this documentary depicts the children’s interactions with parents, siblings, and with their immediate environment. Playful activities with household pets like cats and dogs seems to be a common thread that ties the four youngsters together. “Babies” is an interesting documentary movie from producer Alain Chabat, director Thomas Balmes, and StudioCanal, a very modest hit in theatrical release.
