Director David Leitch and producer-star Charlize Theron have turned out a first class spy thriller movie “Atomic Blonde.” Theron plays a spy desperately trying to find a list of double agents before it gets into the hands of Soviet spies on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
“Atomic Blonde” features some fantastic action sequences expertly handled by Leitch, who was also at the helm of a similar film called “John Wick” back in 2014. Worth mentioning is the fourteen minute fight-and-car chase scene where Theron’s character attempts to save Spyglass, played by Eddie Marsan. Good stuff, although the violence is at times excessive.
“Atomic Blonde” has quite a talented international cast including Charlize Theron (South Africa), James McAvey (Scotland), John Goodman and Sam Hargrave (USA), Til Schweiger and Barbara Sukowa (Germany), Eddie Marsan, Toby Jones, James Faulkner (England), Sofia Boutella (France), Roland Moller (Denmark), Johannes Johannesson (Iceland), Daniel Bernhardt (Switzerland), and Bill Skarsgard (Sweden), son of Nordic luminary Stellan Skarsgard.
The excellent screenplay by Kurt Johnstad was adapted from the 2012 novel “The Coldest City” by Anthony Johnston and Sam Hart. The coldest city is not doubt a reference to the book and film set in East Berlin and West Berlin. “Atomic Blonde” was a modest hit at the box office for Focus Features and other independent production companies.
