My Review

A classic George Bernard Shaw play received first class treatment on the British Broadcasting System. “Arms and the Man,” a satire on the romanticizing of love and war and the human condition, was expertly directed by James Cellan Jones in this made-for-television movie. Producer Shawn Sutton ensured great production values with authentic period costumes and sets.

Helena Bonham Carter and Pip Torrens head an excellent cast that also includes Kika Markham, Patsy Kensit, Nicholas Chagrin, Dinsdale Landon, Patrick Ryecart, and Mark Crowdy. The play first premiered in 1894 in London, UK, and was made into a motion picture in 1932 (Britain) and 1958 (West Germany). This version was first broadcast as an episode of the BBC’s “Theatre Night” in April, 1989.
