My Review

The Best Picture of 2012 is…..”Argo.” Director Ben Affleck (“The Town” 2010) stars in this movie where he plays a CIA operative who attempts to rescue six American diplomats from Tehran, Iran, under disguise of filming a science fiction movie during the 1979-1981 Iran hostage crisis. Affleck’s tight direction and a well written screenplay by Chris Terrio keep the viewers on the edge of their seat for the entire length of the two hour film.

The actors deliver outstanding performances, starting with Affleck doing a good job in the lead role, all the while directing himself and the rest of the production. The supporting cast includes Bryan Cranston as the CIA Deputy Director, John Goodman as the movie makeup artist, Alan Arkin as the movie producer, Philip Baker Hall as CIA Director Stansfield Turner, Bob Gunton as Secretary of State Cyrus Vance, as well as Victor Garber, Tate Donovan, Clea Duvall, Scoot McNairy, Rory Cochran, Christopher Denham, Kyle Chandler, Chris Messina, Richard Kind, Sheila Vand, Omid Abtahi, and Richard Dillane.

Producers Ben Affleck, George Clooney, and Grant Heslov have created a very watchable spy thriller, a true story based on a book (“The Master of Disguise” by Antonio Mendez 1999) and a “Wired” magazine article (“The Great Escape” by Joshuah Bearman 2007). It was successful at the box office for GK Films, Smokehouse Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures. “Argo” won three Oscars out of seven nominations including Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture of 2012.
