“Another Man’s Poison” is a British drama film telling the story of a English mystery writer who kills her husband, disposes of his body in a local lake, and later tries to kill the man posing as her husband. Director Irving Rapper (“Now, Voyager” 1942) and screenwriter Val Guest put together an uneven movie with a mediocre script that has inconsistencies in the plot and storyline, hindering the film’s watchability.
The stars of the show, Bette Davis and Gary Merrill, keep the film from falling apart completely with their on-screen charisma and personas, helped out by Emyln Williams, the eminent veteran Welsh actor. Co-stars include Barbara Murray, Anthony Steele, Reginald Beckwith, and Edna Morris.
It is worth mentioning that both Davis and Merrill struggled with English accents in the first thirty minutes of the film, then dropped them completely after that. “Another Man’s Poison” was not successful at the box office for producer Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Angel Productions, Eros Films, and United Artists.
