My Review

“Animal Kingdom” is an Australian crime drama about a woman who runs a ring of criminals that includes her three sons. The tension and subsequent drama increased when her 17-year-old grandson moves into her house after the death of his mother, her only daughter.

The film received scores of accolades Down Under. Crisp direction by David Michod, in his big screen debut, really made this picture the exciting view that it is. Michod also wrote the screenplay. It inspired an American television series of the same name that aired on the TNT cable channel from 2016 to 2022.

The cast is headed by Jacki Weaver playing Janine “Smurf” Cody, and she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her efforts. James Frecheville plays her grandson “J,” Ben Mendelsohn, Sullivan Stapleton, and Luke Ford play the three sons, Joel Edgerton plays Baz. Others include Guy Pearce, Laura Wheelwright, Anthony Hayes, Dan Wyllie, and Mirrah Foulkes.

The watchable “Animal Kingdom” was a flop at the box office for Screen Australia, Film Victoria, Screen NSW, Showtime Australia, and Blue-Tongue Films.
