“Anger Management” is a comedy film about a businessman who is sentenced to an anger management program under the direction of a famous therapist who employs unconventional methods. The laughs, shenanigans, and horseplay proceed from there, well directed by Peter Segal (“Tommy Boy” 1995) from a superb screenplay by David S. Dorfman.
The cast is headed by Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson as the businessman and the therapist, respectively. They execute in the humor department in their patented comedic styles. Co-stars include Marisa Tomei, Luis Guzman, Woody Harrelson, John Turturro, Allen Covert, Kurt Fuller, Jonathan Loughran, Krista Allan, January Jones, Clint Black, Kevin Nealon, Nancy Carrell, Isaac C. Singleton Jr., Cody Arens, and Lynne Thigpen as Judge Daniels. This was Thigpen’s final role in a film career that started in 1973 with her first appearance in the musical “Godspell” from Columbia Pictures.
Celebrity cameos were made by Heather Graham, John C. Reilly, Harry Dean Stanton, John McEnroe, Derek Jeter, Robert Merrill, Bob Shepard, Judith Nathan, Bob Knight, Roger Clemens, and Rudy Giuliani, former Mayor of New York City (1994-2001). Although somewhat formulaic, “Anger Management” is a watchable and very hilarious comedy which was a big hit at the box office for Happy Madison Productions, Revolution Studios, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
