My Review

“Angels in the Outfield” is a comedy film telling the story of the Pittsburgh Pirates manager whose team is in perpetual last place. While wandering through Forbes Field one night, he is addressed by an angel who states that heaven will help the Pirates win games if the manager can give up his habits of cursing, swearing, and fighting with the players. The hilarity proceeds from there, well directed by Clarence Brown (“The Yearling” 1946), from a lucid screenplay by Dorothy Kingsley and George Wells, the story conceived by Richard Conlin.

The stars includes Paul Douglas as the manager, Janet Leigh as a newspaper reporter, Keenan Wynn as a sportscaster, Donna Corcoran as the girl claiming to see angels in the outfield, and James Whitmore as the voice of the angel. Other cast members include Lewis Stone, Spring Byington, Ellen Corby, Bruce Bennett, Marvin Kaplan, King Donovan, with cameos by Bing Crosby (15% owner of the Pirates), Ty Cobb, Joe Di Maggio, and Barbara Billingsley as a hat check girl.

The very watchable and enjoyable “Angels in the Outfield” broke even at the box office for producer Clarence Brown and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
