My Review

“Amazing Grace” is the inspirational story of William Wilberforce’s efforts to end the slave trade throughout the British empire. Ioan Guffudd seems to personify Wilberforce, the MP who guided the anti-slavery legislation through Parliament and realized its passage on Feb. 23, 1807. Albert Finney portrayed his friend John Newton, a former slave ship captain who composed the famous hymn “Amazing Grace” after his conversion to Christianity.

Director Michael Apted (“The World Is Not Enough” 1999) and screenwriter Steven Knight did an excellent job putting together this film with high quality production values. The supporting cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Michael Gambon, Romola Gairi, Rufus Sewell, and Toby Jones.

“Amazing Grace” was moderately successful at the box office for producers Patricia Heaton and David Hunt, FourBoys Films, Walden Media, Bristol Bay Productions, Ingenious Film Partners, and Samuel Goldwyn Films.
