My Review

“All the President’s Men” is an insightful political thriller about journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein’s investigations that uncovered the Watergate scandal that eventually brought down the presidency of Richard M. Nixon. The masterfully written screenplay by William Goldman was adapted from the book by the duo when they worked for the Washington Post.

Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman portrayed Woodward and Bernstein in a twin tour de force, keeping viewers enthralled from start to finish in what could have been a tedious 138 minute picture. Noteworthy supporting performances were turned in by Jason Robards as editor Ben Bradlee and Jane Alexander as Judy Miller. Both were nominated for supporting actor Oscars, with Robards winning the coveted statuette. (Other Academy Award winners for “All the President’s Men” include Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Art Direction.)

The formidable supporting cast includes Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Stephen Collins, Ned Beatty, Meredith Baxter, Penny Fuller, Penny Payser, Lindsay Crouse, Robert Walden, F. Murray Abraham, Richard Herd, Nicholas Coster, Polly Holiday, James Karen, John McMartin, and Hal Holbrook as the mysterious “Deep Throat.” Frank Willis, who was an actual security guard at the Watergate apartment complex, appeared as himself in a cameo.

Director Alan J. Pakula (“The Sterile Cuckoo” 1969) created a modern-day film classic and a big hit at the box office for producer Walter Coblenz, Wildwood Enterprises, and Warner Bros. Pictures called “All the President’s Men.”
