My Review

Ellen Burstyn won the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Alice Hyatt in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” Burstyn delivered an excellent performance as a woman who goes through two bad relationships before moving out of town for a fresh start. Director Martin Scorsese (“Mean Streets” 1973) was at the helm of this project that has a gritty realism, holding the audience’s attention for the nearly two hour running time. It was converted into a decidedly lighter sitcom called “Alice” that aired on CBS-TV from 1976 to 1985 starring Linda Lavin.

The capable supporting cast behind Burstyn includes Kris Kristofferson, Harvey Keitel, Diane Ladd, Valerie Curtin, Billy “Green” Bush, Harry Northup, Leila Goldoni, Lane Bradbury, and a young Jodie Foster in one of her early film roles. Director Scorsese tapped Foster two years later for a monumental role in his next picture “Taxi Driver.” Vic Tayback stars as Mel Sharples, the colorful owner and head cook of Mel’s Diner in the movie, who moved over to the television version.

“Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” was successful at the box office for producer David Susskind and Warner Bros. Pictures. The excellent screenplay was written by Robert Getchell. The film editing was performed by Marcia Lucas, wife of George Lucas, who would go on to edit the “Star Wars” trilogy (1977-1983).
