My Review

Will Smith does a fantastic job portraying boxer Muhammed Ali in the biopic “Ali.” Producer-director-screenwriter Michael Mann (“The Insider” 1999) managed to keep an even pace in this 157 minute film, balancing screen time between boxing scenes and personal moments and celebrity appearances.

Smith showed great depth in the title role, personifying the legendary boxer, without a doubt. Jon Voight played Howard Cosell in heavy makeup. Both were nominated for Oscars for their efforts. Co-stars include Jamie Foxx, Ron Silver, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Rodriguez, Giancarlo Esposito, as well as Mario Van Peebles as Malcolm X, Michael Bentt as Sonny Liston, James Tony as Joe Frazier, Charles Shufford as George Forman, LeVar Burton as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Jada Pinkett Smith as a former Playboy bunny.

“Ali” was a flop at the box office, partly due to its large budget, for producers Michael Mann and Jon Peters, Peters Entertainment, Forward Pass Inc., Overbrook Films, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
