My Review

“Airport” is a disaster film about an airport manager trying to keep the airport open during a snowstorm, while a suicide bomber plots to blow up an airliner in flight. Producer Ross Hunter (“Pillow Talk” 1959), known for his lavish productions, and director-screenwriter George Seaton (“The Country Girl” 1954) kept this 137-minute movie on track to be an outstanding drama with numerous storylines going at the same time.

The very large cast includes Burt Lancaster as the manager of the fictitious Chicago airport; Dean Martin, Barry Nelson, and Lloyd Nolan as airplane pilots; Jacqueline Bisset as the most beautiful stewardess ever in history; Van Heflin as the deranged terrorist; and Helen Hayes as the loveable little-old-lady stowaway. She won “Airport’s” only Oscar, for Best Supporting Actress. It had a total of nine nominations.

Other cast members include Jean Seberg, George Kennedy, Barbara Hale, Maureen Stapleton, Dana Wynter, Gary Collins, Jesse Royce Landis, Whit Bissell, Larry Gates, and Peter Turgeon. Filmed in amazing Technicolor, with costumes designed by Edith Head, “Airport” was the first of the 1970’s film genre. It was a massive blockbuster in theatrical release for Ross Hunter Productions and Universal Pictures.
