My Review

Director Julie Taymor (“Titus” 1999) has put together an innovative musical romantic film called “Across the Universe.” This love story between a lad from Liverpool, England, and a girl from Dayton, Ohio, contains 34 songs written by members of the Beatles.

The unique story by Taymar, Dick Clement, and Ian La Frenais was put into screenplay form by Clement and La Frenais. Taymor skillfully weaves the songs into the storyline, with some stunning choreography mixed in. Watch for the amazing bowling alley sequence.

The young cast is exceptionally talented. Evan Rachel Wood as Lucy (“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”) and Jim Sturgess as Jude (“Hey Jude”) fit the bill as the young couple in love. The supporting cast includes Joe Anderson, Dana Fuchs, Martin Luther McCoy, T. V. Carpio, Timothy T. Mitchum, and Carol Woods.

There were musical cameo appearances by Bono, Joe Cocker, Eddie Izzard, and Selma Hayek, among others in the watchable “Across the Universe,” which unfortunately was a box office bomb for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing.
