“About My Father” is a culture-clash comedy film about a young man’s relationship with his Italian immigrant father, and how they get along with his fiance’s parents from a WASP heritage with ancestry going back to Plymouth Rock. Director Laura Terruso and screenwriters Sebastian Maniscalco and Austen Earl do a good job of balancing the comedic and the dramatic elements to create a pleasant and watchable film that does not take itself and the subject matter too seriously.
Maniscalco based the story on his own life and on his material as a standup comedian. The cast is excellent, with Robert De Niro playing his father, Leslie Bibb as the girl friend, David Rasche and Kim Cattrall as the future in-laws, and Anders Holm and Brett Dier as his fiance’s brothers. Unfortunately, the very watchable “About My Father” did not do well at the box office for Depth of Field Productions and Lionsgate Films.
