“A War” is an insightful war picture written and directed by Danish filmmaker Tobias Lindholm. This nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar tells the story of a Danish military unit fighting the Taliban in the Afghanistan War. It centers on company commander Claus Pederson, showing war scenes interspersed with scenes at home of his wife and children coping with life without him.
Pilou Askaek gave a fine performance as Pederson; ditto for Tuva Novotny as his wife Maria. The pair brought Lindholm’s script to life more than convincingly, demonstrating that wartime experiences cross national borders. The mostly Danish cast also includes Soren Malling, Dar Salim, and Charlotte Munck in this film “Krigen” (“A War”) from Nordisk Film Production and AZ Celtic Film.
