Robert Redford and Nick Nolte provide plenty of laughs, and some serious moments as well, in the buddy picture “A Walk in the Woods.” The story is of two friends who decide to walk the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. Redford and Nolte play well off of each other with their opposite personality types.
The screenplay was written by Rick Kerb and Bill Holderman, adapted from the 1998 book by Bill Bryson, based on Bryson’s real life experience hiking the Appalachian Trail for three months.
Co-stars include Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Kristen Schaal, Hayley Lovitt, and Nick Offerman, well remembered as Ron Swanson of NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” (2009-2015). They were well directed by Ken Kwapis (“He’s Just Not That Into You” 2009). Bob Redford was one of the producers, with his Wildwood Enterprises as well as Route One Films handling the project. “A Walk in the Woods” was a modest success at the box office.
