My Review

“A United Kingdom” is a well-crafted film about the real-life romance between an African prince of Bechuanaland (now Botswana) and a British office clerk. David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike, who both co-starred in “Jack Reacher” back in 2012, delivered excellent performances here under the guiding hand of director Amma Asante (“Belle” 2013) and screenwriter Guy Hibbert.

The script was adapted from the 2006 book “Colour Bar” by Susan Williams. This period piece was set in the late 1940’s through the 1950’s, with outstanding production values and character development by Asante. The strong supporting cast includes Terry Pheto, Vasi Kunene, Jack Davenport, Jack Lowden, Tom Felton, and Nicholas Lyndhurst and Anastasia Hille as the bride’s parents. “A United Kingdom” is a very watchable movie from BBC Films, Fox Searchlight Pictures, and 20th Century Fox.
