My Review

Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue star in the romantic drama “A Summer Place,” a box office sensation back in 1959. It is the story of a wealthy businessman who brings his wife and daughter to the Maine coast where he worked as a youth. He runs into his ex-girlfriend and they become involved in a passionate tryst. At the same time, his daughter and her son fall in love unaware of their parents’ situation. Director-screenwriter Delmer Daves put together this glossy melodrama with superior production values, including an engrossing storyline that made the 130 minute running time go by very quickly, a big hit for Warner Bros. Pictures.

The cast alongside Dee and Donahue includes Richard Egan and Dorothy McGuire as their parents, as well as Arthur Kennedy, Constance Ford, Jack Richardson, Martin Eric, and film veteran Beulah Bondi as Mrs. Hamble. The unforgettable instrumental theme song “A Summer Place,” written by Max Steiner, was recorded by Percy Faith and his Orchestra. It was number one on the music charts for a record nine consecutive weeks. And the beautiful cinematography by Harry Stradling was shot at the Monterey area of central California, doubling for the Maine coast.
