My Review

Tom Hanks delivers another gem of a performance as a cranky man who has trouble getting along with neighbors in “A Man Called Otto.” Director Marc Forster (“Christopher Robin” 2018) and screenwriter David Magee strike a good balance between very serious topics and light material. They helped Hanks in his performance as he slowly peeled back layers of Otto’s life to show how he got into his life situation. It is surprising that the film did not receive any Academy Award nominations.

The supporting cast includes Mariana Trevino, Rachel Keller, Manuel Garcia-Ruffo, Mike Birbiglia, Cameron Britton, Juanita Jennings, Peter Lawson Jones, John Higgins, and screenwriter David Magee in a small part. Tom Hanks’ son Truman Hanks plays the young version of his character in flashbacks. Hanks and wife Rita Wilson served as two of the producers, and were no doubt disappointed when “A Man Called Otto” was only modestly successful in theatrical release, along with Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing.
