My Review

“A League of Their Own’ is a sports drama-comedy film about a female baseball league that sprung up in World War II in the Midwest. Director Penny Marshall (“Awakenings” 1990) demonstrated good organizational skills at the helm of this ensemble effort. She managed a large number of stars and lesser known actors to make this a film with great production values, good performances, and a smooth 128 minute running time.

The cast includes Tom Hanks as the team manager, Geena Davis and Lori Petty as sister teammates, Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell as two other ball players, Jon Lovitz as the scout, and Garry Marshall (brother of the director) as the team sponsor. Other cast members are Bill Pullman, David Strathairn, Anne Ramsey, Ann Cusack (sister of John and Joan Cusack), Tracy Reiner, Bitty Schram, and Tea Leoni in only her second motion picture appearance.

The screenplay was written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, the story originated by Kelly Candaele and Kim Wilson, and the musical score composed by Hans Zimmer. “A League of Their Own” was successful at the box office for Parkway Productions and Columbia Pictures.
