My Review

“A Hard Day’s Night” stars the Beatles playing themselves. The fun starts with Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison eluding screaming fans by taking refuge on a train, dodging even more fans, and finally escaping into a hotel. All of this action is interspersed with their music, with the nearly ninety minute running time ending with a fifteen minute concert.

Director Richard Lester (“The Mouse on the Moon” 1962) did a marvelous job guiding the Fab Four through the production of the movie. He had a great screenplay by Alun Owen to work with, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay. The other Oscar nod for “A Hard Day’s Night” was Best Musical Score (Adaptation) for George Martin.

Songs include “All My Loving,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “She Loves You,” “And I Love Her,” as well as the title song, “A Hard Day’s Night,” among others. Co-stars with the Beatles include Victor Spinelli, Richard Vernon, Margaret Nolan, Norman Rossington, Anna Quayle, and Wilfrid Brambell as John McCartney, Paul’s grandfather. There were uncredited cameos by Charlotte Rampling, Patti Boyd, and Phil Collins.

The watchable “A Hard Day’s Night” was a huge hit at the box office on both sides of the Pond for Walter Shenson Films, Proscenium Films, and United Artists.
