My Review

“A Farewell to Arms” is the story of a romance between an American ambulance driver and an English nurse in Italy during World War I. Director Frank Borzage (the first person to win the Best Director Oscar for “7th Heaven” in 1927) was excellent at the helm of this project, obtaining marvelous performances out of Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes in the lead roles. Their clever and subtle portrayals really “make” this film, outstanding achievements early in their careers.

The screenplay, written by Benjamin Glazer and Oliver H. P. Garrett, was adapted from the 1929 novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway. Co-stars include Adolphe Menjou, Mary Philips, Jack LaRue, Mary Forbes, Gilbert Emery, and Blanche Friderici as the head nurse. “A Farewell to Arms” was successful in theatrical release for Paramount Pictures, and was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning two: Best Sound Recording (Franklin Hansen) and Best Cinematography (Charles Lang).
