My Review

“A Bridge Too Far” is the story of Operation Market Garden during World War II, where the Allies attempt to capture important bridges in the Netherlands in the hope to breaking though the German lines. Director Richard Attenborough (“Young Winston” 1972) directed a massive cast in a big effort to bring this story to the big screen. The film ran a little long at just under three hours, with a bulky screenplay by William Goldman, that tends to overwhelm viewers.

The cast includes Dirk Bogard, Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Byrne, Michael Fox, James Caan, Gene Hackman, Elliot Gould, Ryan O’Neal, John Ratzenberger, Arthur Hill, Robert Redford, Maximilian Schell, Laurence Olivier, Liv Ullmann, Hardy Kruger, Gerald Sim, Donald Pickering, Denholm Elliot, Jeremy Kemp, George Innes, Ben Cross, and Richard Attenborough in an uncredited cameo.

“A Bridge Too Far” was only a modest success in theatrical release for Joseph E. Levine Productions and United Artists.
