My Review

The Best Picture of 2001 is…..”A Beautiful Mind.” Ron Howard directed this amazing story of famous mathematician John Nash, who suffered from schizophrenia while developing complex mathematical theories. Russell Crowe delivered quite a tour-de-force of a performance, nominated for an Oscar. The four Academy Awards wins for “A Beautiful Mind” include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay (Akiva Goldsman), and Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Connelly).

Director Howard and screenwriter Goldsman certainly deserved the accolades, with the film adapted from the 1998 biography by Sylvia Nasar. Co-stars with Crowe and Connelly include Ed Harris, Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Judd Hirsch, Josh Lucas, Christopher Plummer, Vivien Cardone, Austin Pendleton, Anthony Rapp, and Jason Gray-Stanford.

The epilogue states that Nash’s theories have “influenced global trade negotiations, national labor relations, and even breakthroughs in evolutionary biology.” Nash won the Nobel Prize for economics in 1994, “A Beautiful Mind” won a ton of cash at the box office for Imagine Entertainment, DreamWorks Pictures, and Universal Pictures, and Ron Howard & company won a boatload of Oscars in March, 2002.
