My Review

Tom Hanks got an Oscar nomination for his stellar portrayal of popular television personality Fred Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Rogers’ show “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” entertained preschool audiences from 1968 to 2001. This role of the innocuous Rogers, an ordained Presbyterian minister, is a perfect fit for Hanks, himself a popular motion picture personality.

The other star of the show, Matthew Rhys, delivered a good performance as a jaded journalist who is assigned to do a story on Rogers. Rhys’ acting range here is in line with his famous roles where his characters were a bit rough around the edges, in television series like “Brothers & Sisters” (2006-2011) and “The Americans” (2013-2018).

Director Marielle Heller (“The Diary of a Teenage Girl” 2015) seemed to maximize optimal performances out of Hanks and Rhys, as well as keeping the picture on an even keel from start to finish. The excellent screenplay by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster was based on a 1998 Esquire magazine article by Tom Junod called “Can You Say Hero.”

The supporting cast of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” included Chris Cooper, Enrico Colantoni, Christine Lahti, Maryann Plunkett, Wendy Makkena, Tammy Blanchard, and Noah Harpster. This is a very watchable movie from TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures.
