My Review

“Till the Clouds Roll By” is a biopic of composer Jerome Kern. MGM pulled out all the stops in this salute to Kern, bringing in big stars and several directors to put together the project. Richard Whorf (“The Sailor Takes a Wife” 1945) was the main director, with others being Busby Berkeley, Henry Koster, Vincente Minnelli (his wife Judy Garland’s segments), and George Sidney (the “Ol’ Man River” finale featuring Frank Sinatra). The screenplay was penned by Jean Holloway, Myles Connolly, and George Wells.

The film was really a big collection of musical segments telling the story of Jerome Kern. The massive cast includes Robert Walker as Kern, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Dinah Shore, Angela Lansbury, Esther Williams, Van Johnson, Cyd Charisse, Tony Martin, Gower Champion, Kathryn Grayson, Lucille Bremer, Dorothy Patrick, Virginia O’Brien, Ray McDonald, and Paul Langton as Oscar Hammerstein II. The watchable Technicolor musical “Till the Clouds Roll By” was a big hit at the box office for producer Arthur Freed and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Footnote: Tony Martin and Cy Charisse met on the movie set of “Till the Clouds Roll By.” They were married two years later, in 1948, and remained married for sixty years until her death in 2008. Martin passed in 2012. The marriage produced one son, Tony Martin Jr. Charisse had one son by her first husband, Nico Charisse, whose sister’s daughter is Nana Visitor of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” fame.
