My Review

“Notorious” is an Alfred Hitchcock espionage thriller movie where Cary Grant plays a U. S. government official who recruits Ingrid Bergman as a spy to bring Nazis to justice after World War II. She travels to Brazil, where she engages an ex-German officer, played by Claude Rains, with the danger increasing as the two become increasingly involved. The Master of Suspense certainly has no shortage of engrossing and riveting drama in this excellently crafted movie from a top-rate screenplay by Ben Hecht.

The three principals turn in marvelous performances. These are perfect roles for Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, and Claude Rains. Co-stars include Louis Calhern, Moroni Olsen, Leopoldine Konstantin, Reinhold Schunzel, Ivan Triesault, Alexis Minotis, Wally Brown, Fay Baker, Bea Benaderet, and Friedrich von Ledebur. The very watchable “Notorious” was a huge hit at the box office, the eighth highest grossing picture of 1946, for producer Alfred Hitchcock, Vanguard Films, and RKO Radio Pictures. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, Best Supporting Actor (Rains) and Best Original Screenplay (Hecht).
