“Morning Glory” is the story of the ups and downs of an ambitious actress from a small town who moves to New York City determined to become a big star on Broadway. Director Lowell Sherman (“She Done Him Wrong” 1933) put together a decent film which is basically a showcase for the talents of star Katherine Hepburn. This was her first big movie production, and she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. The downside of “Morning Glory” is the uneven script by Howard J. Green, causing parts of the film to seem tedious and boring.
Co-stars include Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Adolph Menjou, C. Aubrey Smith, Mary Duncan, Don Alvarado, Fredric Santley, Richard Carle, Tyler Brooke, Geneva Mitchell, and Helen Ware as Nellie. “Morning Glory” had some success at the Depression Era box office for producer Pandro S. Berman and RKO Radio Pictures.
Ms. Hepburn won a total of four Academy Awards, the most for any single performer. They include “Morning Glory” (1933), “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1968), “The Lion in Winter” (1969), and “On Golden Pond” (1982). Her film career lasted from 1932 to 1994.
