My Review

“Under the Yum Yum Tree” is a romantic comedy about a landlord who prefers to rent rooms to attractive single females. He is challenged when he finds out that one of his boarders is engaged, and she has an agreement with her boyfriend to see how things go when they abstain from pre-marital sex. Things go haywire and wacky after that, fairly well directed by David Swift (“Pollyanna” 1960). He co-wrote the screenplay with Lawrence Roman, adapted from Roman’s Broadway play of the same name (1960-1961). This film would be called a screwball comedy if it was produced in the 1940’s.

The cast includes Jack Lemmon as the amorous landlord, Carol Lynley and Dean Jones as the engaged couple, Edie Adams, Paul Lynde, Robert Lansing, Imogene Coco, Bill Bixby, Joy Harman, Celeste Yarnall, Bill Erwin, and James Millhollin as The Thin Man. The watchable “Under the Yum Yum Tree” was popular at the box office for Columbia Pictures. The theme song “Under the Yum Yum Tree” was performed by James Darren in the opening credits, written by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen.
