My Review

“Is Paris Burning?” is a World War II drama set in 1944 when the Nazi German general occupying Paris receives orders from Berlin to destroy the city if it becomes clear that Allied troops are about to invade. French director Rene Clement did an excellent job at the helm of this classic motion picture, probably one of the best World War II films of all time. It is first-class all the way, with outstanding production values, marvelous performances, and great writing, with Francis Ford Coppola and Gore Vidal penning the screenplay. It was based on the 1964 book of the same name by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre.

The international cast includes Jean-Paul Belmondo, Charles Boyer, Leslie Caron, Glenn Ford, Orson Welles, Kirk Douglas, Alain Delon, Yves Montand, Robert Stack, Anthony Perkins, E. G. Marshall, George Chakiris, Claude Dauphin, Simone Signoret, and Gert Frobe, who was most famous for playing the title role in the James Bond thriller “Goldfinger” (1964).

The very watchable “Is Paris Burning?” was a big hit in theatrical release for Seven Arts Productions, Marianne Productions, Transcontinental Films, and Paramount Pictures. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography/Black-and-White (Marcel Grignon). The rousing and inspiring musical score was written by Maurice Jarre.
