“The Ugly Truth” is a romantic comedy about a woman television producer who is teamed with a male celebrity who has less-than-modern opinions about men and women. They fall in love but their stances in life cause friction and a full-blown “battle of the sexes” erupts on the set of their television program. Director Robert Luketic (“Monster-in-Law” 2005) put together a mediocre romantic comedy from a weak script penned by Nicole Eastman, Karen McCullah Lutz, and Kirsten Smith.
The stars of the show are Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. They do deliver acceptable performances, as do co-stars Nick Searcy, Cheryl Hines, John Michael Higgins, Bree Turner, Kevin Connolly, Bonnie Somerville, Allen Maldonado, and Craig Ferguson as himself. Despite deficiencies, there are enough laughs that make it a good escapist entertainment movie. The watchable “The Ugly Truth” was a big hit at the box office for Columbia Pictures, Relativity Media, Lakeshore Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
