My Review

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau update their well-worn schtick and old chemistry from “The Odd Couple” (1968) in the romantic comedy “Grumpy Old Men.” They play long-time neighbors who have been feuding for years, which is intensified when an attractive female neighbor moves in, a possible love interest for both. Director Donald Petrie (“Mystic Pizza” 1988) put together a formulaic and somewhat predictable comedy that is nevertheless filled with plenty of laughs. The amusing screenplay was written by Mark Steven Johnson.

Ann-Margret fits the bill as the new gal in town, well equipped to be comedic partners with Lemmon and Matthau. She is quite adept at comedy as well as drama. Co-stars include Kevin Pollack, Ossie Davis, Daryl Hannah, Burgess Meredith, Buck Henry, Christopher McDonald, Steve Cochran, and Katie Sagona in her film debut as Jack Lemmon’s granddaughter. The watchable and entertaining “Grumpy Old Men” was very popular at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures. A sequel called “Grumpier Old Men” was released in 1995 with the same cast plus Sophia Loren.
