My Review

“Rumours” is a satirical comedy-horror film about the annual G7 summit where the leaders of the top seven economies of the world meet to discuss current issues. The heads of state are drafting a statement on an unnamed world crisis when they slowly begin to realize they are all alone. Canadian directors-screenwriters Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson have put together a very strange film that pushes the limits of absurdity. They deserve credit for unconventional creativity and dry humor that includes a visit from a giant brain.

The stars include Cate Blanchett as the Chancellor of Germany, Charles Dance as the President of the United States, Roy Dupuis as the Prime Minister of Canada, Rolando Ravello as the Prime Minister of Italy, Nikki Amuka-Bird as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Denis Menochet as the President of France, and Takehiro Taka as the Prime Minister of Japan. The supporting cast includes Alicia Vikander as the President of the European Commission and Zlatko Buric as the President of the European Council. Blanchett seemed to be doing an imitation of Angela Merkel, and Dance appeared to be a Joe Biden double.

The strangely watchable “Rumours” did not do well at the box office for Square Peg Production Company, Buffalo Gal Pictures, Maze Pictures, Elevation Pictures, and Plaion Pictures.
