My Review

Director Rob Marshall (“Chicago” 2002) and The Walt Disney Company have turned out a high quality and entertaining sequel to the beloved children’s classic “Mary Poppins,” which premiered in 1964. The storyline of “Mary Poppins Returns” has the popular nanny returning to visit Michael and Jane Banks, enmeshed in problems of their own as adults.

Emily Blunt plays the title role with all of the charm she can muster. Blunt heads a talented cast, including Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer as the adult Banks children; Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh, and Joel Dawson as Michael Banks’ three kids; along with Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury (in one of her final movie roles), Meryl Streep, David Warner, and original cast “Poppins” member Dick Van Dyke returning, this time as chairman of the Fidelity Bank. The weak link in the “Poppins Returns” chain is Lin-Manuel Miranda, who delivered a wobbly performance as a cockney lamplighter.

The screenplay by David Magee, who also had a hand in the story by Marshall, featured a 15 minute animation sequence reminiscent of the one in the original. All in all, “Mary Poppins Returns” is a decent sequel to the first “Mary Poppins,” not as good as Walt Disney’s production but a watchable picture nonetheless.
