My Review

“The Man with Two Brains” is a science fiction black comedy where Steve Martin plays a brain surgeon who is experiencing trouble in his new marriage. On their honeymoon in Vienna, they meet another doctor (really a mad scientist) who has some rather unorthodox medical practices. Director Carl Reiner (“The Jerk” 1979) put together quite a humorous film with plenty of laughs, co-writing the screenplay with Martin and George Gipe.

The cast do a good job in the laughter department, including Steve Martin in the lead role, Kathleen Turner as his wife, and David Warner as the mad scientist. Co-stars include Paul Benedict, George Furth, Peter Hobbs, Earl Boen, James Cromwell, Francis X. McCarthy, Jeffrey Combs, and Merv Griffin as himself. Sissy Spacek was in an uncredited role as the voice of Anne.

“The Man with Two Brains” is an entertaining and watchable comedy, no doubt mainly due to the influence of Carl Reiner, and a modest success in theatrical release for Warner Bros. Pictures.
