My Review

Adam Sandler plays an aspiring hockey player who discovers he actually has quite a talent for golf – and can make a lot of money going on the pro golf circuit in “Happy Gilmore.” Director Dennis Dugan (“Problem Child” 1990) does a good job at the helm of this formulaic comedy, from a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Adam Sandler.

This is a made-to-order part for Sandler in the title role; he is perfect as Happy Gilmore. Co-stars include Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Carl Weathers, Frances Bay, Richard Kiel, Dennis Dugan, Joe Flaherty, and Allen Covert. Cameos are made by Bob Barker, Ben Stiller, Kevin Nealon, Lee Trevino, and Robert Smigel. The fight scene between Sandler and Barker increased the ratings of “The Price is Right” among younger viewers.

The watchable “Happy Gilmore” qualifies as fun escapist entertainment, especially for fans of Adam Sandler’s schtick. It was very popular at the box office for Brillstein-Grey Entertainment, Robert Simonds Productions, and Universal Pictures. Sandler was nominated for Worst Actor in the Golden Raspberry Awards as well as for Worst Actor in the Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.
