“The Critic” is the story about a theater critic in London in the 1930’s who lures a struggling actress into a blackmail scheme with dire consequences. This slow-moving film gets bogged down in a morass of sloppy directing by Anand Tucker and a tedious screenplay by Patrick Marber. It was adapted from the 2015 novel “Curtain Call” by British author Anthony Quinn (not to be confused with the famous American actor of the same name).
The star of the show is Ian McKellen, who delivers a pompous and unvaried performance, as are most of his roles. His unfortunate co-stars include Gemma Atherton, Mark Strong, Leslie Manville, Romola Garai, Ben Barnes, Alfred Enoch, and Nikesh Patel. This unwatchable art house cinema nonsense “The Critic” was a flop at the box office for BK Studios, Fearless Minds Production Company, Steven Stories Productions, and Lionsgate UK Limited.
