My Review

“Three Husbands” is a comedy film about a recently deceased playboy who, upon arrival in heaven, gets his wish to send letters to each of his poker-playing buddies stating that he had an affair with that man’s wife. The “comedy” proceeds from there, but is spotty in the laughter department due to uneven direction by Irving Reis (“The Big Street” 1942) and a weak premise and a poorly written screenplay by Vera Caspary, Edward Eliscu, and Gertrude Purcell.

The cast includes Emlyn Williams in the lead role, Eve Arden, Ruth Warrick, and Vanessa Brown as the three wives, and Howard Da Silva, Sheppard Strudwick, and Robert Karnes as the three hubbies. The support comes from Jonathan Hale and Louise Erickson and two Hollywood legends, Billie Burke and Jane Darwell. The so-so comedy “Three Husbands” was a production of United Artists.
